You Can Fix Anything & Save Money (With YouTube)

Yesterday was the day I was going to shampoo my office-play-room-game-room carpet.  I really wanted to outsource this to a local carpet cleaner, but it’s so expensive!

Well, I grabbed my trusty hand-me-down cleaner (thanks, Mom and Dad), prepped the soapy water, and fired it up.

The agitator brushes just sat there, not agitating anything…except for me.

“Okay,” I thought to myself, “it’s a bit old, so maybe if I turn off and turn it on again it’ll work.”  No.

Jiggle the cleaner?  No.

Angle back the handle?  No.

Stomp and glare at it in denial? No.

Take it apart and see what I can do to fix it?  You bet!

The power of determination and YouTube!

Don’t Be Afraid to Attempt to Fix Your Own Stuff

I can’t tell you enough how important it is for you to not be afraid to tackle some of your own basic repairs and maintenance rather than outsourcing and hiring someone to do it for you.  You’d be a amazed at how much money you can save by just trying to do it yourself.

I’m never one to shy away from taking stuff apart and tinkering with it to see if I can fix it, but I realize that I’m not really sure where to start.  And then I remember….YOU TUBE!!!!!

YouTube has taught me more in the past 9 years than anything else.  Not even reading articles or books matches up to the power of YouTube.

I’ve learned how to poach eggs, install plank flooring, seal my garage floor, express my dog’s anal glands (oh, yes…I save major bucks doing it myself), and now…I’ve learned how to repair my own Hoover SteamVac.  Sweet!

After watching the how-to video for fixing the agitator brushes for my carpet cleaner, I grabbed two philips’ head screw drivers (the X ones), a can of WD-40 (a must have), and two trashy towels to use as my work surface, I got to work.

20 minutes later, I was done and had no random screws leftover…winning!

I’m pleased to report that my carpet is clean and stain free!  Take that, Handy Manny!

Are you a fearless DIY-er?  What’s the most awesome thing you’ve ever fixed and how much money did it save you?
