Do you ever find yourself going through your day when a song, a breeze, the color of the sky, or an aroma takes you on a mental journey that leaves you feeling inspired and joyful? You get that tingly sensation that starts right in the center of your chest and radiates through your body. You breathe deeper, your mood instantly brightens, and you allow yourself to be a conduit of positive thought and energy…ahhhhh!
For me, one of those cues that sends me to a happy place is the taste and smell of Trident’s original flavor chewing gum. You see, for as long as I can remember, I associate Trident’s original flavor with one of the most important people in my life, my mom.

Trident was here! I love my mom!
My mom always had gum with her and when I would open her purse or give her a hug, Trident original flavor was always around. The blue packaging, the little red tab you used to open the packet of gum (pre-cardboard packet…remember the foil ends?), the sharp minty aroma of a freshly opened pack of gum…mmm.
One of the things I treasure most about my mom has to be how she’s managed to successfully make the transition from parenting her child to parenting her adult child. We’ve evolved into more than just mother and daughter. And I am proud to call my mom one of my best friends.
Now that I’ve sufficiently buttered her up…she’s probably tearing up as she reads this…let me share one of the craziest, most awesome moments my mom and I have ever shared.
Unfolding Memories With My Mom
Back in 2005, when I had a “real” full time job, I invited my mom to join me on a business trip to San Antonio.
Yes, Mom, I’m going there. I know, I know…go pee and come back to read the rest.
We’d eat breakfast together, she’d wander the city while I sat in meetings, and then we’d meet up for dinner and shopping. Well, we had a fabulous location right on the riverwalk, and a stone’s throw away from our hotel was the mall. One of those evenings, we decided to head out for some light shopping.
We entered the mall on the first floor via one of the major department stores. After browsing the first floor, we proceeded to look for the up escalator, but we just never found it…we found the down escalator…which is odd…they’re normally side-by-side, right?
Well, while standing at the foot of the down escalator, I took an inconspicuous look around, turned to my mom and said, “Well, we can just run up the down escalator. You game?”
Mom, looking me a little incredulously answered, “Okay, if you say so.”
Knowing that I’d have to pace my run up faster than the rate of the motion of the down escalator, I begin a brisk pace up the down escalator. I get to the top and turn around. Mom is making decent progress up, until <snort> I see her progress slow to a standstill…
Like a hamster on a wheel…she wasn’t going anywhere…not up…not down…just running in place.
At the same time she’s laughing so hard, she can’t talk and she appears to be looking past me. I’m putting my hand out to help her end this ridiculous cartoon-like escapade, urging my mom to pick up the pace, and I hear a deep voice behind me:
“Ma’am, there’s no playing on the escalators.”
Yep, there’s the store manager…a bit older than me, a lot younger than mom, scolding two grown ass women for playing on the escalators.
My mom almost peed her pants as she rode the elevator in reverse, all the way down to the bottom. Somehow she managed to find that missing up escalator and we laughed ourselves silly all the way out of the mall. We still laugh like crazycakes about this to this very day.
I love that I can be silly with my mom. I love that we can share the pleasure of each other’s company. And I love that we really do have fun together. And every time I grab a stick of Trident original flavor chewing gum, I get transported to my mom’s side.
