Life Insurance and the Stay At Home Spouse

Life Insurance and the Stay At Home Spouse

A couple of years ago, I realized that I am not allowed to die.  Seriously.  Heaven forbid (not that I’m presuming I’ve earned my place beyond the pearly whites yet), something were to happen to me, I don’t think my spouse would be able to go on.  Not in the completely inconsolable way (which he would be, I mean, I’m worth missing), but in the “where do the forks go” sense of going on.  We’ve been married 8 years, and to this day, this preeminent military professional doesn’t know where we keep the toilet paper.

You Can Afford To Save…And Here’s How To Do it!

“I don’t have/earn/make enough money to save.”  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this line as a financial counselor.  It always stops me in my tracks, no matter who it’s coming from.  I’ve heard it from clients when I worked in personal financial management in Airman and Family Readiness. I’ve heard it working with clients facing the decision whether or not to file bankruptcy. And any time I hear it, my first thought is, “Yes, you do.  You can save.  It’s all a matter of choice and perspective.”

Cereal Sticker Shock No More

Cereal Sticker Shock No More

Have I ever told you how much I love shopping at the Commissary? For my non-military readers, that’s what we call the grocery store located on base/post.  Sometimes, I don’t even realize the savings until it slaps me in the face.  To make matters worse, I’m a horrible coupon clipper, so you wouldn’t imagine my delight at being contacted to share a special program brought to you by General Mills to help military families save even more at the Commissary! 2013 BAH Rates Are Here! Now What?

2013 BAH Rates Are Here! Now What?

It’s that time of year again!  2013 BAH rates finally published and some of you might be dancing around thinking about how you’ll spend that extra cash, if you were lucky enough to see an increase.  Maybe you’re thinking about moving or finally grabbing that premium cable, or maybe you’re considering saving the extra cash for a rainy day (my vote).

Oh, and don’t worry.  If BAH for your area decreased for the area you’re already residing in, never fear.  You’ll continue to receive your same rate…phew!  Regardless, this is a great time to reevaluate your housing expenses and make sure you’ve got your budget in check! [Read more...]

How The Military Changed How We Celebrate Christmas

How The Military Changed How We Celebrate Christmas

This is not one of those posts where I lament the challenges of being a military family or where I shake an angry fist at Uncle Sam for keeping me a bazillion miles away from my family at Christmas, no siree.  This post is all about how our military travels have opened us up to new and exciting Christmas traditions from around the world.

One of the coolest things about being part of a military family is that you get the rare opportunity to see, first hand, how other countries and cultures celebrate life through their holiday traditions. [Read more...]

Would You Ever Skip Thanksgiving?

Would You Ever Skip Thanksgiving?

My Christmas tree is decked out.  The house is in full Noel mode.  It looks like we took a page out of consumer America’s book and skipped over Thanksgiving.  No turkey.  No trimmings.  No pie.  No baking.  No stuffing.  No belt loosening.  No football.  No houseful of guests.  No traveling to family.  And best of all, NO BLACK FRIDAY!  <insert sound of shoppers screaming everywhere>  Would you ever consider skipping Thanksgiving?  I am not considering it.  I’m doing it. You’re probably asking yourself, time-what?  Time? Dog?  What is that?  Is that like Time, Dawg?  Like I got time, Dawg?

Well, kind of.  It’s kind of like that.  I do have more time to do amazing things with my day because I have time, Dawg, thanks to Time Dog.  Time Dog is a daily personal virtual assistant service made to help busy women save time and money.

Disney Parks Blog ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Family Game Day!

What can I say? Disney Parks definitely knows how to roll out the red carpet.  The ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ Family Game Day event at Downtown Disney in Orlando, Florida, was an absolute BLAST!  If you’ve ever been to anything that Disney has a hand in, you know they don’t go anything but full throttle.  Not only did we get a sneak peak of Disney’s much-hyped soon to be released Wreck-it Ralph, we got an all access pass to DisneyQuest to channel our inner arcade gamer.  [Read more...]

When Being Deployed Is Better Than Being Home

When Being Deployed Is Better Than Being Home

I hate watching the clock as the afternoon melds into the dinner rush.  I know.  I’ve posted about how to make the dinner dilemma disappear, lauded our awesome military family lifestyle, encouraged you to set a dinner hour,  and roared proudly about being a military spouse, but today is the day where I need to drop my pompoms and scream.  [Read more...]

Congratulations! You Just Won The Parent Lottery!

To My Very Loved Newborn Nephew,

Congratulations!  This is your lucky day!  You just won the parent lottery!  I know you haven’t had the chance to really process this exciting news and I imagine you’re a bit shell shocked right now given your rapid entry into the world.  Based on what I know, the phone is ringing off the hook…well, the ring tone is going crazy…I realize phones now don’t have a hook…don’t worry, I’ll explain that one later. Mission First: Why Our MilFam Set A Dinner Hour

Mission First: Why Our MilFam Set A Dinner Hour

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Dinner is Hell. I cannot tell you how much Homeskillet’s (read: my hubby) schedule has sucked from day one in the fabulous United States Air Force.  Eight years in and it just gets more and more ridiculous and less and less predictable. They weren’t joking when they said mission first and all that jazz.  We’ve lost a Saturday or Sunday, or a Saturday and Sunday, or a Christmas Morning (yes…a Christmas Morning), and then there was the ever awesome deployment that was supposed to be three months out that wound up being three days into a vacation.  You know, the usual. Toilet Humor

Toilet Humor

For months, our downstairs toilet has been plunged more times than it’s successfully flushed.  After the first couple of weeks, you’d think we’d call the plumber, but no.  Its like we accepted the fact that we just had a crappy crapper, and like any well loved, oft used household…appliance…is that even the right word?  Well, we just came to accept that the porcelain throne required a little extra love.  A jiggle of the handle here, a kick there, several goes with the plunger, and then bob’s your uncle, TA-DA! A successful flush.  [Read more...]
