2013 BAH Rates Are Here! Now What?

It’s that time of year again!  2013 BAH rates finally published and some of you might be dancing around thinking about how you’ll spend that extra cash, if you were lucky enough to see an increase.  Maybe you’re thinking about moving or finally grabbing that premium cable, or maybe you’re considering saving the extra cash for a rainy day (my vote).

Oh, and don’t worry.  If BAH for your area decreased for the area you’re already residing in, never fear.  You’ll continue to receive your same rate…phew!  Regardless, this is a great time to reevaluate your housing expenses and make sure you’ve got your budget in check!

If you’re sitting around scratching your head trying to figure out what this “BAH” jargon means, BAH is the abbreviation for Base Allowance for Housing.  Active duty members receive this allowance to spend towards their (you guessed it) housing.

If you live on-base or on-post, your BAH goes directly to the installation housing manager and is typically deducted directly from the LES.  If you live off base, you receive BAH as part of your paycheck.

If you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for the most financially advantageous decision when it comes to maximizing your BAH.  Luckily, I’ve got you covered.  Check out my top tips for making the most of your BAH.

If you’re due an increase in your BAH, make sure to keep an eye out on your LES for any changes.  I have easy video guides to walk you through reading your LES and accessing MyPay, if you’re not sure where to start (a great tool for new and veteran military spouses alike): How To Read an LES and Navigating MyPay.

Remember, you want to keep your budget in ship shape at all times, and housing accounts for the largest chunk of your budget.  The more money you  and your military family spend on housing, the less money you have to spend on everything else.  This is a great time to reevaluate your budget and consider reducing your debt.

As with everything money, you’ve got to make sure you’re opening up and talking money with your spouse or significant other.  With the New Year fast approaching-bar the pending Mayan Apocalypse-I encourage you to sit down with your honeys and talk some money!  And, yep, I’ve got you covered there, too!  Check out my post, How to talk money with your honey, and it’s follow up, Now, what do we do?
